Biden's Executive Order: Charting the Course for Ethical AI
In an unprecedented decision, President Biden has rolled out an executive order that's all about setting the rules of the road for AI.
With a clear vision of eight goals, this isn't just policy—it's a blueprint for a future where AI is safe, respectful of privacy, and fair.
The National Institute of Standards and Safety (NIST) is in charge of ensuring AI models are rigorously tested before they mingle with the public, and big players like OpenAI and Meta are now expected to be open books when it comes to safety.
While it's not the final word on AI regulation, it's definitely a step forward and in the right direction. As someone who's always championing the ethical use of AI, I’m skeptically optimistic about it. It's about making sure the AI we build isn't just smart—it's also built within the ethical and safe norms.
It’s all very good and well, so let’s see if everyone complies… I’ve already heard rumors about some of the big players looking into setting their companies up in “international waters”… only time will tell!
UK's AI Summit: A Leap Towards Responsible AI
In another of what’s been deemed as a historical moment, a new chapter in AI governance has been written in the halls of Bletchley Park.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and a group of global leaders have just wrapped up a summit that could well be a game-changer for AI's future.
They've agreed on what’s been labeled as the "Bletchley Declaration", an agreement that champions the rigorous testing of AI before it hits the market, aiming to keep humanity in the driver's seat.
Wait, didn’t we just talk about this?!
Yes, but this one had a more international flavor. The summit is expected to be a commitment by countries like the US, EU and even China (who have been penalised quite a lot lately by the US with the ban on NVIDIA chips) to foster a shared understanding of AI's potential and pitfalls.
On the bright side, there were brilliant minds attending the summit and Yoshua Bengio, who is considered one of the Godfathers of AI, will work on a "State of the Science" report that helps everyone understand what AI can do and what the risks are.
However, it's one thing to agree on principles; it's another to put them into action. The summit has sparked a conversation, but we'll need more than dialogue to ensure AI evolves as a force for good.
It's a promising step, but the proof will be in the pudding – can we truly regulate AI in a way that benefits everyone?
Meet Leo, Brave’s new AI chatbot
There’s a new AI chatbot on the block and his name is Leo. This one is launched by the privacy fans’ favourite browser Brave.
Built into their browser, Leo's already available for desktop users, with a mobile debut on the horizon. It's your go-to for translations, quick summaries, and even content creation, minus the privacy worries—Leo doesn't save your chat history or use it to train the AI model under its hood.
But here's the catch: while the standard Leo is free and runs on Meta's tech, the premium version taps into Anthropic's Claude Instant for a better, faster AI experience and costs $15 a month.
Leo’s value proposition is that you don’t have to trade in your privacy to use AI.
I’m excited about this because it addresses a concern I often hear from business owners, who worry about the safety and privacy of their data. Show us what you’re made of Leo!
New Zealand Ascends in Global AI Readiness, Securing a Top Spot
And let’s finish the news section with some AI readiness research, this time from Salesforce. The latest "Asia Pacific AI Readiness Index 2023" has just been released, which is a report card for the tech-savvy nations of the region.
It analyses how countries are embracing AI, looking at everything from tech infrastructure to government policies and how they're impacting society.
With Singapore, Japan and China as the leaders of the ranking, the report states how their resources and policies are at the forefront of the region.
But I really wanted to highlight the fact that little New Zealand is currently sitting at a fantastic 6th place, just after big countries like South Korea and Australia. New Zealand is making waves with its digital government and open data policies.
This is a reflection of New Zealand's savvy approach to AI, blending technology, policy, and data governance very well. And with the Privacy Commissioner stepping up the game in May 2023, it's clear NZ is serious about playing AI the right way.
What does this mean for the land of the long white cloud? It's not just about being good at AI; it's about setting the pace for how to roll it out smartly and ethically.
Slowly but surely, New Zealand is charting new territory for others to follow and as a Kiwi, I’m proud of that.
